Tennessee House advances bill to ban reappointing lawmakers booted for behavior

The highly unusual move marked the third time since the Civil War that a House member was expelled in Tennessee. Jeremy Durham, a Republican, was removed from the House over allegations of sexual misconduct with at least 22 women. Robert Fisher, also a Republican, was expelled after being convicted of soliciting a bribe in exchange for attempting to block pending legislation. Political tensions rose when Pearson, Johnson and Jones, from the House floor, joined with hundreds of demonstrators who packed the Capitol to call for passage of gun control measures.

GOP wields supermajority power

Not even a minute amount,” Eddie Mannis, a former Republican member of the Tennessee state House, said in an interview. Jones said on CNN that Republicans are using authoritarian methods to silence the opposition. "It's very concerning and it represents a clear and present danger to democracy all across this nation," Jones said.

They used a bullhorn on the House floor, speaking without being recognized and leading protests calling for gun restrictions as Republicans, who hold a supermajority in the chamber, stood by. Many of the Covenant families had met with Lee and lawmakers hoping to persuade them to drop the idea of arming teachers. In the final days of the legislative session, Covenant families said they had collected nearly 4,300 signatures from Tennesseans against having public school staffers carry weapons on school grounds.

Tennessee three: What you need to know about the expulsion of Democratic TN lawmakers

Rep. Bob Freeman, D-Nashville, rose to mention that Covenant head of school Katherine Koonce was laid to rest this week. Freeman said Koonce's husband said some "remarkable words" at her funeral, including what her husband believed would be Koonce's wishes of generosity and forgiveness in the wake of the tragedy. Cohen wrote that expelling the representatives will disenfranchise their constituents. Companion legislation is up in the Senate Finance Committee next week, and a separate proposal for the state to fund SROs, agents and other safety measures is included in the Governor’s budget amendment which both chambers are still considering. People added to the noise by blowing whistles, chanting, beating drums, stomping feet and chanting. Rep. Johnny Garrett, R-Goodlettsville, proposed that House rules be suspended to show a 7-minute video, compiled from publicly posted clips, of events that occurred last Thursday.

The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment about Lee’s plans for the bill. House GOP Caucus Chair Jeremy Faison, R-Cosby, told The Tennessean he had "just found out about" the ethics finding on Thursday morning and would need to review the details before passing judgment. The memo was first reported by NewsChannel5, which reported at least one legislative intern complained of alleged sexually harassing communications from Campbell. Initially, there were no public repercussions for Campbell, the Republican Caucus vice chair, in the three weeks since the subcommittee issued their findings.

For some, the partisan expulsions are a stark reminder of the supermajority power Republicans have amassed over the state's Democratic, urban areas. Lawmakers considered the fate of the three Democrats steps away from hundreds of protesters whose chants permeated the House doors, while more than 200 people stood in silence in the House galleries. Protesters continued to call on Republican lawmakers to pass gun reform and slammed the efforts to expel the lawmakers, who have been dubbed the "Tennessee three." Still, the expulsions have elevated the two lawmakers’ political profiles, with little long-term gains for Republican leadership as Pearson and Jones could be reappointed to their seats within days or weeks. Controversy has surrounded the vote by Tennessee lawmakers to expel two members from the state legislature after they and a third member — all Democrats — took part in a protest against gun violence from the floor of the chamber. "We're also in a moment right now with those in power in the Republican Party don't want to be held accountable," Zephyr told ABC News.

Faison called out Jones for being accusatory, and claimed the House followed the rules before Jones demanded more answers. Jones argued the "precedent that any member who voices dissent or opposition can be expelled from the legislative body." James Traficant, a Democrat who represented Ohio, was expelled from the House when he was convicted on "federal corruption charges and for misuse of campaign funds," the attorney general's report reads.

Robert Fisher, a Republican, was expelled after he was found guilty of accepting a bribe while in office, according to the attorney general. At least 27 members of Nashville’s 40-seat Metro Council said they plan to reappoint Jones and send him back to the Tennessee House of Representatives. Those members would give him the simple majority he would need to reclaim his seat. In this move, Republicans removed two of the youngest Black lawmakers from the General Assembly, further reducing an already small minority caucus. Here's what happened to lead up to the expulsions from the House, what the expulsion means and what could come next.

The Tennessee House of Representatives voted to expel Pearson, 69–26.[30] HR 63, the resolution to remove Pearson, was sponsored by Andrew Farmer.[35] Charlie Baum, Bryan Richey, and John Gillespie were the three Republicans to vote against the resolution. Walking arm-in-arm with a crowd of what he described as thousands of people, Rep. Justin Jones walked back to the Tennessee state capital after the Nashville Metropolitan Council voted unanimously to reappoint him to the state House. State Rep. Justin Jones was sworn back into his House District 52 seat as an interim representative Monday. A third lawmaker, Rep. Gloria Johnson,  a White woman and Democrat who also participated in the demonstration, survived the vote and held on to her seat in the GOP-dominated chamber.

"Rather than debating the merits of the issue, these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly elected representatives of the people of Tennessee." Jones and Pearson led chants through a bullhorn as legislators instituted a recess. Video filmed by a Republican on the house floor during the event — also a violation of the legislature's rules, Democrats contended on Thursday — showed the three speaking on the floor as demonstrators could be heard in the background.

Jones also noted the rare instances in which the House or Senate have taken such a drastic measure against a sitting, elected representative. Jones was the first of the three to address the chamber, offering an explanation for his actions on the well of the floor on March 30. Rep. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, center, Rep. Justin Pearson, D-Memphis, back left and Rep. Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville, huddle on the floor of the House chamber Thursday, April 6, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn. Following the failed vote, Johnson was asked by reporters if she thought there was a reason she'd had a different outcome.

Johnson added that she believed Jones and Pearson had been treated differently than she ahead of the votes. “Yes indeed, happy resurrection day,” Pearson said as he signed paperwork for his return. He also voted against expelling Democrats Rep. Gloria Johnson and former Rep. Justin Pearson.

"Specifically, the expulsion sanction was used because the representatives refused to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment (a condition necessary for Tennessee's readmission to the Union)," Russell said. By expelling the members, the chamber could meet its majority threshold more easily. This is the first time multiple Tennessee legislators have been ousted in a single legislative session since 1866, when Tennessee was struggling to adopt citizenship rights for formerly enslaved people after the Civil War. It's rare for any legislative body in the U.S. to expel a member — most states have reportedly never done so. Even in that context, the circumstances in Tennessee — where the Republican-led House expelled two Black lawmakers — stand out.

2023 Tennessee House of Representatives expulsions Wikipedia

tennessee house republicans expulsion

The “Tennessee three,” as they’ve come to be known, face expulsion from the House for approaching the podium between bills during session last week without being recognized, a breach of chamber rules. Emotions ran high on Thursday morning after Jones opposed a school safety bill presented by Republicans, arguing it would further militarize schools while not addressing gun reform issues. Other Democrats said they were concerned the bill treats the "symptoms" of school shootings, not the problem. The Thursday vote was widely viewed as a certainty as soon as the Republican caucus voted to file expulsion resolutions.

Why are Tennessee Democrats being expelled?

His photo and bio have been removed from the Tennessee General Assembly's website, but on his campaign site, Jones describes himself as a Nashville activist and community organizer. Vice President Kamala Harris headed to Nashville to meet with them on Friday, and President Biden spoke with the three via conference call and invited them to visit the White House.

(AP) — Tennessee’s Republican-dominant House on Wednesday spiked legislation that would have banned local governments from paying to either study or dispense money for reparations for slavery. Bringing guns into schools only adds risk, said the Vanderbilt University junior and volunteer with gun-control group Students Demand Action.

What did the 'Tennessee three' lawmakers do?

House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, called for a vote on resolutions to expel the three on Monday. Many democrats asked their colleagues to vote against expulsion, including Nashville Rep. Bob Freeman. After more than two hours of expulsion debate, House Republicans have voted to oust Rep. Justin Jones, D-Nashville, from the Tennessee House of Representatives. While the House moved on from debate over Johnson's expulsion, Margo Price took to twitter to dispel claims that her megaphone was used on the house floor by Reps. Johnson, Jones and Pearson. House members turned to the final resolution to expel freshman Rep. Justin Pearson, D-Memphis. Pearson was sworn in on Monday, March 27 - the day of the Covenant attack - after a special election which he won to fill the seat of the late Rep. Barbara Cooper.

What are the House rules around expulsion?

Pearson later said he could not "sit idly by" after lawmakers that day walked through a gauntlet of protesters, many of whom were teenagers, screaming for gun reform. Thousands of Tennesseans have marched en masse on the state Capitol three times in the 10 days since the tragedy, demanding gun reform measures the ruling party is hesitant, if not outright opposed, to publicly support. Before the House voted on Johnson's fate, House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Ray Clemmons, D-Nashville, argued there was not enough evidence to uphold the allegations in Johnson's expulsion resolution.

"The expulsion of six members from the Tennessee legislature in July 1866 was for 'the contempt of the authority of this House,' " Vanderbilt University's Russell, a principal senior lecturer in political science, told NPR. Democratic state Rep. Justin Jones of Nashville speaks before his colleagues voted to expel him from the House on Thursday. Constitutional scholars say such measures are very rare — and have uncertain consequences. The decision to return Jones to his seat came after the council voted to suspend a procedural rule that prevents an individual from being nominated and appointed to the seat in the same meeting. Magnet High School student Sheeva Azad was one of many who spoke during the student and teacher rally outside the Capitol.

Before that, state lawmakers last ousted a House member in 2016 when the chamber voted 70-2 to remove Republican Rep. Jeremy Durham over allegations of improper sexual contact with at least 22 women during his four years in office. The split votes drew accusations of racism, with lawmakers ousting Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who are both Black, while Rep. Gloria Johnson, who is white, survived the vote on her expulsion. Republican lawmakers, meanwhile, are also pushing forward on a proposed bill that would keep Johnson from appearing on the ballot multiple times for different offices in one election.

They would also need to clear a background check and undergo 40 hours of handgun training. Her censure is reminiscent of the Republican-controlled Tennessee state House of Representatives expulsion of two Democratic lawmakers in what marked the first partisan expulsion in the state's modern history. Zephyr said, "When the speaker asks me to apologize ... on behalf of decorum, what he's really asking me to do is be silent when my community is facing bills that get us killed."

Council member urges colleagues to not play political games and “place Justin Jones back in his rightful place”

Expulsion resolution sponsor Rep. Andrew Farmer, R-Sevierville, asked Pearson about a letter he sent on Monday to every House member in which he took “full responsibility and accountability” for his actions. Pearson acknowledged responsibility, and said his goal was to bring attention to the issue of gun violence. Justin Jones said the expulsion was not a silencing of them as individuals, rather the silencing of an entire movement.“We’ll see you on Monday,” he said, referencing the special meeting already called by Metro Council to appoint an interim Representative. The trio has demurred this week on future plans, instead choosing to focus on the upcoming expulsion vote. Johnson on Monday indicated she was consulting with lawyers, though one attorney said pursuing a lawsuit could be an uphill battle given as the state Constitution gives the legislature express authority to discipline and expel its own members. "Rep. Jones represents thousands of people in this state whose voices have been silenced time and time and time again," she said.

In a subsequent tweet, she clarified, "Yes, it was my megaphone no, @VoteGloriaJ & @brotherjones never used it." Pearson also said the body should do more to educate new members on rules of decorum. During his remarks, Pearson referenced the names of the six Covenant victims several times, but repeatedly mispronounced the name of 9-year-old Hallie Scruggs. It wasn’t walking up to the well, it wasn’t being disruptive to the status quo, it was the silencing of democracy and it’s wrong,” Pearson said. Jones accused Bulso of calling him a "damned disgrace" in a private moment earlier this week.

In addition to that, Seifter said, "politically motivated expulsions are likely to be unpopular and mobilize opponents." "Unlike other ways that state legislators may entrench their power or act in a countermajoritarian fashion (a pattern I've written about here), disciplinary actions are typically self-limiting," she added. It's especially rare for a legislature to expel members over actions relating to substantive policy disagreements.

Chase gets insight about himself when he goes speed dating with House and Wilson. House bets him a hundred dollars that he can act like an uncaring, unemployed American and still get plenty of women interested in him just because of his looks. To Chase's surprise and dismay, he gets plenty of matches even when he treats women poorly. He realizes that his previous relationships may just have been due to his looks rather than actually connecting to the women he's dated.

In the end, however, she tells Chase that, "[She doesn't] care how it happens, only that it does." He proposes to her, and she accepts.

One thing they all have in common is their requirement for high quality customized puzzles at low prices and a quick turnaround time. Manor Lords is one of the more infrastructure-intensive city builders out there. For example, let’s say you want to start producing yarn — not even clothes, just yarn. You’ll need a livestock trader, a sheep farm, and a weaver’s workshop at a minimum. But each part of that process requires a family to be assigned to the building(s), and families require burgage plots to live on. Our team has produced millions of premium stock puzzles over the last number of years.

Create your puzzle based on the number of photos and image quality

Choose various options for your personalized puzzles, from the number of pieces to the physical size, the shape, and tin design. Once you do start upgrading burgage plots, though, the families on that plot will expect two kinds of food to be available from then on. And if your town can’t supply that, they’ll start to get unhappy, which lowers your approval and slows down your town’s growth as well as makes your militias lose morale. Once you have a building built, you have to hit the plus button to assign a family to work there. This takes one of the unassigned families and makes them dedicated to working at that building. They still tend the garden or livestock on their burgage plots and, more importantly, if you pause or remove the assignment from the building, they’ll go back to the unassigned pool.

Our kids’ puzzles include fun themes like the zoo and animals, so putting together the puzzle will be both fun and educational. Our website offers not only a vast selection of ready-made jigsaw puzzles but also the ability to create your own puzzles using our convenient puzzle builder. The image then gets sliced up into any number of puzzle pieces, just like your offline jigsaw puzzle.

Your photo, your puzzle

By default (while they’re unassigned), families in Manor Lords do, basically, whatever the town needs. Usually, this is construction — any buildings or upgrades you have happening — or escorting the town’s oxen around to haul timber (usually for construction). They also seem to (but don’t quote me on this — those little people are hard to follow around) pitch in by moving goods to the granary, storehouse, and marketplace. Manor Lords is complex, fidgety, and more than a little impenetrable. There’s a lot that will be familiar about it if you’re a veteran of city-building games, but Manor Lords has it’s own idiosyncracies even with those.

Whatever House's opinion of Chase, it has always been clear that Chase worships and fears House. Chase usually follows House's instructions, and takes any insults House dishes out without retaliating. However, by the third season, it was clear that Chase was tired of waiting for House's praise or appreciation. Chase does seem to genuinely like him though, and hugs him when he thinks House is dying of a brain tumor in Half-Wit. Everyone expects Chase to be upset about Cameron's departure, but he's remarkably sanguine about it. When all his friends press him to talk about it, he deliberately strikes House to get them to start thinking about that instead.

At one point there were reports of four suspects in the car but by the time it got to Los Angeles there was only the driver. The front driver's side tire shredded off and the chase eventually came to an end at a Hacienda Heights gas station in a standoff. The suspect was seen reversing into an officer's vehicle, but the truck was stuck. He was accused of then stealing a parked white van, and after smashing it into two cars and becoming stuck, he hopped out the window and climbed over the hood to run. On Nov. 9 around 5 p.m., a bizarre pursuit began in the Fullerton area.

Nevertheless, after being fired and rehired by House in previous seasons, and finally returning at House's request in the eighth season, Chase's relationship with House becomes clearer. For the first time in the history of this show, House shows emotion after Chase is stabbed from inducing a psychotic break in a patient, albeit an accident, his own fault. House even takes the blame for Chase's stabbing and again for the first time in the history of the show, apologizes sincerely to Chase (Nobody's Fault). House goes from belittling his opinion, to letting Chase hug him, to calling him an idiot, to going far out of his way to let Chase keep his job in the episode The Mistake.

It follows the bank’s New York City flagship branch located at 390 Madison Avenue which opened in 2019. Chase is easily the best deductive reasoner on the team, exceeded only by House himself. He also correctly infers that Jessica Adams owns guns based solely on his analysis of her character and background. In the fifth season, specifically The Itch, Cameron's actions reveal she has commitment issues. She specifically refuses to give Chase a drawer in her dresser for just a few of his things.

In the sixth season, he returns to the diagnostic team, first working for Eric Foreman, then for House when House returns to head the team after his medical license is reinstated. Near the end of the eighth season, he temporarily resigns, but returns after House fakes his own death and becomes the Head of Diagnostics, replacing House. In a wild pursuit during which a 33-year-old parolee switched cars three times, carjacked a work truck on live TV, and smashed into multiple patrol cars, the suspect accused of being behind the wheel will face at least 25 charges.

The Schindler House is laid out as two interlinking "L" shaped apartments (referred to as the Schindler and Chase apartments). Each apartment was designed for a separate family, consisting of 2 studios, connected by a utility room. The utility room was meant to serve the functions of a kitchen, laundry, sewing room, and storage. The house is built on a flat concrete slab, which is both the foundation and the final floor. The walls are concrete tilt up slabs, poured into forms on top of the foundation. A Chevy Chase home with an unusual design and a storied past is on the market for $1,795,000.

Also because while House spent time in jail, Chase was living in Australia. In episode Teamwork, Cameron presses Chase to quit PPTH in an effort to run from being eventually discovered about Chase's killing of Dibala in The Tyrant. After thinking it through, Chase decides to stay at PPTH and to face the consequences. Cameron then decides to leave him because Chase 'chooses House instead of her' and he 'cannot distinguish between good and evil anymore'.

Chase also offers online and mobile services, business credit cards, and payment acceptance solutions built specifically for businesses. He also makes it clear to Thirteen that he is interested in her; he asks her if she would have sex with him before she leaves, supposedly as a joke. She gives him a very strange look, before being interrupted.Later on he asks about the look she gave him and repeats the question. She shakes her head and says no, but then gives him a hug, which leads to him getting mixed signals. He also becomes rather promiscuous, openly dating several attractive women at once, including the short-lived fellow he hired to replace Thirteen.

Common House Spider

american house spider

For example, common house spiders and American wolf spiders look similar, but you can tell them apart by the arrangement of their eyes. Another identifying feature of common house spiders is their webs. For example, the common house spider and black widow spin cobwebs or tangled webs. In addition, some outdoor spiders like orb weavers can make their way indoors and spin intricate webs, creating a spoked, open web to trap insects. Despite this fact, most people cringe at the sight of a common house spider.

The brown, biting spiders have a tan to medium brown body with a recognizable violin-shaped marking on their cephalothorax. The black house spider is a robust spider with a dark, charcoal-gray abdomen and white speckles. In addition, the spider has a characteristic velvety blackish-gray body and furry legs. Its large, egg-shaped abdomen and color give it the appearance of a tarantula. However, it is classed as a harmless indoor brown spider because it’s not aggressive and only bites if you grab or squeeze it.

Common House Spiders and How to Identify Them, According to Entomologists

Head to the ER ASAP if you suspect you’ve been bitten to get immediate treatment. Other names for the brown recluse spider include brown fiddler, violin spider, or fiddleback spider. Although the violin markings on its head are an identifiable feature, other harmless spiders also have similar markings. However, a unique characteristic of the brown spider is that it has six, not eight, eyes like most spiders. The large brown southern house spider has an oval abdomen with a velvety appearance, a shiny brown cephalothorax, and long furry legs. The cellar spider is a harmless, brown spider with a small rounded abdomen and long thin tan-colored legs.

Common Types of Spiders With Venomous Bites

"House spiders prey on insects and other small creatures," Crawford writes. That may not help with severe cases of arachnophobia, but fear and respect aren't mutually exclusive. The more we know about these misunderstood housemates, the less fodder we have for misguided phobias. In hopes of clearing house spiders' name, here are eight interesting facts that might persuade you to put down the shoe, pick up a magnifying glass and give peace a chance. Yes, but their venom is not harmful to humans, unlike their relatives, the black widow. Spiders are relatively easy pests to get rid of, says Emma Grace Crumbley, entomologist for Mosquito Squad.

Common Types of Spiders Without Poisonous Bites

They are also covered in dense hairs and have thick, short legs, giving them a scary appearance. Another feature is their eight eyes in three rows, with two prominent eyes in the center. Hobo spiders are a type of brown funnel web spider with distinctive chevron, V-shaped patterns on their abdomens. Identifiable features of hobo spiders are two dark stripes and one lighter stripe on the cephalothorax, light brown legs with no bands, and visible spinnerets at their posterior. Wolf spiders typically live outdoors, but the furry brown spiders can enter homes in the fall when the temperature drops.

It ranges from 6 to 12 millimeters in length, with a reddish-brown "head" (the cephalothorax) and a pale, speckled abdomen. It builds funnel-shaped webs, and is known to prey on pest insects inside homes. Before getting into house spiders that have venomous bites, it's important to understand that more often than not, spiders are not aggressive and do not bite. "In my experience, the majority of household spiders are harmless and prefer to keep to themselves," says Mohamed Samir, pest control senior technician with Bugwise Pest Control. When people find common house spiders, they often destroy the web and kill the spider.

Other Spiders in this Family

However, it's important to remember that spiders eat insects, including flies and mosquitoes, and they could be keeping these out of the homes they're inhabiting. Spotting a spider in your immediate vicinity can be a little intense, especially if you have a major fear of the creepy crawlers. And with different species come different levels of concern—which makes learning how to identify the critters important.

Brown widow spiders are typically found in dark, undisturbed areas of your home like behind furniture, basements, attics, or garages. If you want to make sure your house spiders are pulling their weight, check in and under their webs to see what they've been eating. Not everyone who's afraid of spiders hates them, leading many people to try non-lethal eviction.

Common House (Parasteatoda tepidariorum)

This small yellow spider has an identifiable egg-shaped abdomen with a pointed end and dark brown markings on its face and the tips of its legs. The small yellow house spider can measure 0.19” to 0.35” (5 – 9 mm) with a leg span up to 1” (25 mm). Many jumping spiders have red or white markings on their abdomens and can be confused for black widows.

Interior insect monitors are glue traps that can be a valuable tool used to identify and reduce the number of interior hunter spiders in your home. Place them up against the wall or behind dark, damp areas where spiders hide. While bites are rare, they can occur, typically feeling like a small pinch. Though not dangerous, bites can cause pain, swelling, itching, and redness for a few days. When possible, Crumbley advocates for catching spiders and releasing them back outdoors.

A female common house spider can produce several egg sacs in a year. They are very small, papery, brown sacs that hang from the web and can have more than 400 spider eggs inside. The southern house spider is a large dark brown to black spider with a large oval head and elongated fuzzy brown abdomen. Up close, pictures of this house spider show it has dark brown spiny legs and two prominent eyes on top of its head.

There are also false widows, which look similar to a black widow but are completely harmless. Determine which common house spiders are in your home with this guide. American grass spiders are a type of brown funnel weaver spider with an elongated, oval brown body. Identifying features of the grass spiders are the distinctive dark brown bands running down its cephalothorax, mottled brown abdominal patterns, and spiny, orangey legs. Jumping spiders are identified by their black, tan, or gray bodies with orangish or white markings.

Exploring Atomic Bomb History Beyond Los Alamos

It is not arranged chronological--which is usually the format for art history books. With eleven chapters in just under 300 pages, the text provides a comprehensive framework with which to explore the topic of art appreciation. It does not (nor does it claim to) offer a complete art historical survey, but rather uses examples of visual imagery from a variety of cultures, time periods and genres to make larger points about how we actually use art. Its chapter and sub headings suggest a view where art is fully relational to its users, whether they are individuals, communities or nations. Rather than a comprehensive glossary, the authors place key terms at the end of each chapter. It makes an attempt to compare artworks from different time periods and cultures in terms of their function in life, and looks specifically at the viewer’s role in the process.

Hofstra University

Even the metadata for artworks is always clear as there are times where the text will omit information rather than indicating that the information is unknown. Using hyperlinks to supplemental content is a terrific way for students to obtain details on particular objects. This text represents an important contribution in the effort to make art and the study of art accessible to students. Undergraduates studying art appreciation will benefit from the accessible prose, clear design layout, and high-quality in-text illustrations. The text is arranged thematically rather than chronologically and is internally consistent throughout.

In terms of studio art though the book can be a supplement only. Textbooks can be excellent but still not substitutes for the instruction of the hands on manipulation of materials. In general, the illustrations and figures are crisp and high resolution.

Many thanks to the authors, editor, and publisher who have generously shared this work. It should be noted that the writers employ all three points of view--often writing in first person. Such an approach likely makes the text more accessible to college readers. However, a small issue that arises is when the writer first mentions "the viewer," singular, but subsequently uses the pronoun "we" (plural).

About the Book

Las Vegas, with a metro area population of nearly 3 million, is one of the largest cities in the country without an art museum. Rather than enlarging its physical footprint, LACMA aims to broaden its cultural reach, influence and presence in the West, and globally — a benign Manifest Destiny for the California visual arts scene. However, I think designers can speak 'art language' (make art), and artists can speak 'design language' (do design). Get an in-depth exploration into the process of creating sculpture. This studio class builds on the introductory experience of ARTF 1124, 3D Fundamentals with more advanced 3D concepts, materials, tools and techniques. Emphasizes personal exploration, concept development and creative innovation.

I found it sufficient as an outline, and did a lot to fill in the gaps. The book was written in an easy read way with lots of imagery to match concepts. Key terms placed in bold text makes it possible for readers to easily locate if going back and forth from text to key term definitions, located at the end of each chapter.

Important facts, such as year, medium, size, etc., are not included. Even though several chapters are above and beyond what I need for my gen. ed. There are no navigation issues with the text or the display of image examples. The typography, image formatting, and layout system do a nice job of keeping information easy to read and navigate.

Each chapter ends with a summary and review questions to check for student comprehension. This books is not an historical survey, but it offers a wide range of artworks from throughout history and the world to elucidate major themes and concepts. Even while it is non-linear or chronological, the text nonetheless covers terms and ideas specific to historical moments, taking them as case studies to illustrate larger themes. The end of each chapter includes questions to consider and a list of major terms with definitions. I would suggest that this area could be improved by expanding on descriptions in the contents page - there were sometimes cases of repetition when a concept was discussed across multiple chapters (e.g. the Sacred).

art and design

For example, in an art history doctoral program, you might focus your studies on contemporary or Islamic art. A doctorate can also prepare you for executive positions in the field, such as chief curator at a major museum or director of a cultural agency or nonprofit. Most doctoral programs have a highly academic focus, and the degree isn't commonly available for all areas of art and design. For example, technical fields, like graphic design, fashion, and interior design, rarely require a doctorate.

Some chapters need expanding, or the instructor can mix and match chapters in this text with other supplementary material in areas that are lacking. While the thematic approach is important, the chapters read as disjointed and the text is at places overly general and at times repetitious. There should be more focus on an overarching question of “what is art” which would allow the various themes explored in each chapter to read as more cohesive. There are issues with consistency in use of terms, and citations/websites etc. I also wonder about the sources and context with regards to the discussion of historical development of art.

art and design

Alicia has been working for artincontext.com since 2021 as an author and art history expert. She has specialized in painting analysis and is covering most of our painting analysis. In the principles of design in art, it is important not to confuse scale with proportion. Scale relates to the object’s size within the composition compared to all the other objects. Therefore keep it in mind while you do art reading and research, and remember their differences and functions within the visual arts. We will aim to provide the differences between the two while also intentionally applying the terms interchangeably.

I'd like to see how this text works with an eReader for visually impaired or neuro-divergent students. As of now, I do not see an option for the text to be read within this interface requiring a third-party eReader. I addressed some of this in the "consistency" review above but this is one of the books biggest strengths.

Workers should consider joining a professional organization to gain access to networking events, conferences, and forums where like-minded students and graduates can meet and discuss their work. Professionals can pursue paid or free continuing education opportunities. Readers should consider researching massive open online courses (MOOCs), in particular. MOOCs offer free classes and are often hosted by top universities.

Students need to see that current work is being created that adheres to the traditional standards of the historical works referenced through the ages of art instruction. Having said that, the works used do not represent an obsolete view on art evaluation and instruction. I do feel the inclusion of so many art forms and cultures throughout most chapters is confusing however. For example, Chapter 2 attempts too many media such as painting, printmaking, sculpture plus the elements and principles of design making it hard to absorb in a meaningful way. Being a text covering the thematic history of visual art, the content itself will not go out of date.

This idea is deceptively hard to teach, and even experienced art students are confused by Complimentary Colors. Though the text does include some contemporary artists, like Mel Chin, the examples are outdated. It is structured to cover what is art and how to make art in the beginning chapters and then progresses through different forms before landing on specific themes. It can be used as presented or re-arranged to fit another format.

I appreciated the attempt to use both recognizable images from the Western canon as well as lesser known works, although some chapters were more effective in presenting a global perspective than others. Chapter 4 addresses formal analysis, although the overall discussion is largely focused on degrees of representation in the arts. This seemed to present a very "Western" perspective of artistic development, and could perhaps benefit by highlighting western and non-western objects, as well as naturalistic and abstract pieces. I appreciated the discussion of conventions in Chapter 4, and how the text traces them across cultures. This chapter could perhaps be broadened by engaging with diverse belief systems. For example, Chapter 7, which focused on architecture, was more intentional toward representing global perspectives and works of art, which I found to be very helpful in understanding global art production.

After Setbacks, a Textile Artist Finds New Success

Elements of the book followed a framework that as easily followed. When it really comes down to it, some issues of toughness may have come up here and there, but, all in it was acceptable for my student's level. The book feels a bit out of date as it is, though not in danger of becoming more so over time. The PDF interface was a strength of this work - links to outside content supplement the text. Still, there is room for more of this type of content in this text.

The book’s organization would benefit from some reference to a chronology. Without this context, a novice student may struggle to follow a somewhat disjointed selection of art and artifacts. The chapters are clearly defined as are the concise, themed subsections. It could be easily reorganized to fit subunits of a course, though the text is jumbled chronologically due to classification by theme. The text is relevant, and one of its strengths is the breadth and depth of the visual examples anchoring the chapters. The textbook is divided into small reading sections with clear headings and subheadings.

As mentioned previously, more information is needed about the individual sample images. Although I found the non-Western selections slim, the book was inclusive of a variety of works from different cultures and time periods. The book does have a nice section that covers some of the controversies of art.

Chapters 5 and 6 discuss meaning in art and connecting with art. And chapters 8-11 address art as related to special topics such as identity, power, ritual and ethics. A concern here is that architecture is not fully integrated into broader discussions. This is tricky to evaluate because this book is extremely relevant to beginning students. I could see this book being used in an art appreciation class or a class for non-majors not looking to go very deep. In our program, we teach a series of 1 credit beginning seminars for art majors that introduce them to different areas of study in studio art, audience, content, materials, and meaning.

Certificates Programs

The prompts at the end of each chapter also present good starting points for class discussion. Another great advantage of this text is its admixture of canonical and popular objects, drawing upon mainstays of art history as well as more of-the-moment visual culture. It is particularly adept at addressing themes that weave together global works in many media from makers of many backgrounds, thereby questioning the entrenched and monolithic canon. The textbook is written in prose that should be accessible for the average college freshman.

Student Voices

The inclusion of "fourth dimensional" art is particularly helpful in discussing contemporary art. In general, the discussions could be edited to offer a more precise and concise analysis that is less conversational and more direct. Right now it reads as if the authors are pandering a bit to a student audience by invoking memes, selfies, and other ostensibly trendy cultural phenomena. This text successfully manages the difficult task of synthesizing a plethora of approaches when studying art and its history.
